BEML and UMPESL Sign Strategic MoU to Drive Productivity-Linked Mining Solutions in India
In a significant development for India’s mining and heavy earthmoving equipment sector, BEML Limited and Universal MEP Projects & Engineering Services Limited (UMPESL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Voltas Limited – A Tata Enterprise, have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly pursue productivity-linked mining equipment contracts across India.
The MoU encompasses opportunities involving BEML’s wide range of mining equipment for deployment with leading mining companies, including Coal India Limited and its subsidiaries, as well as other major public and private sector mining organisations.
The agreement was signed at BEML’s Corporate Headquarters, “BEML Soudha”, Bengaluru, in the presence of the Chairman & Managing Director, BEML Limited; Director – Mining; Director – Defence; Director – Metro, and other senior officials of BEML and UMPESL.

On behalf of UMPESL, the MoU was signed by Mr. Sharad Thussu, Vice President, in the presence of Mr. Ranjit R. Ravindran, Business Head – Mining, and Mr. Jiso Cherian, Key Account Manager – PSU Business.
From Equipment Supply to Productivity Partnership
The collaboration represents an important step towards moving beyond the conventional equipment-supply model to an integrated, performance and productivity-oriented approach for the Indian mining industry.
Under the broad framework of the MoU, BEML’s indigenous mining equipment portfolio and OEM capabilities can be combined with UMPESL’s extensive experience in mining equipment lifecycle management, operations, maintenance and execution of large productivity-linked mining contracts.
The partnership is expected to explore opportunities where equipment availability, reliability, utilisation and ultimately mine productivity and output become central to the customer value proposition.
Such a model can provide mining customers with greater operational accountability while helping optimise equipment utilisation, lifecycle costs, maintenance practices and production performance.
Strategic Significance
The MoU brings together the complementary strengths of two major Indian engineering organisations.
BEML Limited brings decades of indigenous equipment manufacturing expertise and a comprehensive mining portfolio spanning high-capacity dump trucks, hydraulic excavators, bulldozers, wheel loaders, motor graders, water sprinklers and other specialised equipment for opencast and underground mining applications.
UMPESL, through its Mining & Construction Equipment Division, brings more than six decades of mining-industry experience inherited from Voltas, together with capabilities in equipment operation and maintenance, lifecycle services, project execution and increasingly production and productivity-linked mining contracts.
The partnership therefore creates an opportunity to offer customers an integrated proposition of:
“Indian Equipment + Lifecycle Management + Operational Excellence + Assured Productivity.”
For BEML, the collaboration has the potential to strengthen the lifecycle engagement of its equipment fleet and expand participation in emerging productivity-based contracting models.
For UMPESL, it provides an opportunity to further expand its Mining-as-a-Service and productivity-linked contracting portfolio through association with one of India’s foremost indigenous manufacturers of heavy mining equipment.
Most importantly, for Indian mining companies, the collaboration can facilitate a transition from conventional equipment procurement towards outcome-oriented mining solutions, where OEM capability and professional mining-services expertise are brought together under a common productivity framework.
The MoU assumes particular significance as India’s mining sector seeks higher mechanisation, improved equipment utilisation, greater domestic capability and increased production efficiency. It also complements the broader national objective of strengthening indigenous mining technology and manufacturing capabilities under Atmanirbhar Bharat.
The BEML–UMPESL partnership thus marks the beginning of a potentially important new chapter in the Indian mining industry — transforming mining equipment from an asset into an integrated productivity solution.
