VP Radhakrishnan Lays Foundation for ₹110 Cr Gauhati University Projects

Guwahati, 7th Sept: Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan on Monday laid the foundation stone for infrastructure development projects worth ₹110 crore at Gauhati University, including a multidisciplinary academic building, boys’ and international students’ hostels, and works related to the auditorium and library.

Addressing the gathering, Radhakrishnan highlighted the historic significance of Gauhati University, established on January 26, 1948, as the first university in Northeast India. He noted that the institution has grown into a premier regional university with NAAC A+ accreditation and a ninth rank among State Public Universities in NIRF 2025.

The Vice-President appreciated the university’s efforts to preserve India’s linguistic heritage and welcomed the translation of Assamese and Tamil literary works into each other. He said such academic and literary exchanges reflect India’s cultural unity.

Radhakrishnan also highlighted research at the university on the Brahmaputra Basin, endangered languages, multilingualism, women’s studies, environmental sustainability and Indian Knowledge Systems.

He said India’s higher education ecosystem has expanded significantly since 2014 and credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for widening educational opportunities through new IITs, IIMs, IIITs, Central Universities, AIIMS and other institutions.

The Vice-President noted that women’s enrolment in higher education increased from 1.57 crore in 2014-15 to 2.24 crore in 2023-24, a rise of 42.2 per cent.

He also appreciated Assam’s progress in infrastructure, connectivity, education, investment and employment under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He highlighted the commencement of the first MBA batch at IIM Guwahati and more than 1.64 lakh merit-based government appointments since 2021.

Radhakrishnan urged students and scholars to contribute to the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 by pursuing research addressing community challenges and using technology for inclusive development.

On the occasion, he released Bhupen Hazarika: Hundred Years of a Wandering Songs, edited by Ankuran Dutta and Nani Gopal Mahanta, and the fifth revised and enlarged edition of Chandrakanta Abhidhan.

The Vice-President also attended a cultural programme presented by Gauhati University students and led participants in taking the “No to Drugs” pledge. He urged young people to stay away from substance abuse, exercise self-discipline, manage their time wisely and limit excessive social media use.
