Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, 4th Sept: Nine newborns were shifted to other hospitals after a fire broke out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of a private hospital in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in the early hours of Friday, hospital officials said.

The incident occurred at Asian Hospital in the Jalna Road area of the city. Hospital staff noticed smoke coming from an air-conditioning unit in the NICU, where nine babies requiring intensive or specialised medical care were admitted.

Dr Shoeb Hashmi, who runs the hospital, said the incident was minor and the infants were evacuated as a precaution. Patients in the neighbouring general ward were also moved temporarily before being brought back later.

The newborns were shifted to other hospitals with the consent of their families, he said.

Hospital authorities said the situation was brought under control immediately. The facility was subsequently cleaned and resumed its routine operations.

The in-charge officer at Jawaharnagar police station confirmed that a fire incident had been reported and said there were no injuries or casualties.

The incident comes around 10 days after a major NICU fire at the District Women’s Hospital in Amravati, where three newborns died and 36 others were rescued. The Maharashtra government subsequently ordered a high-level inquiry into the tragedy.
