The Impact Player rule is back in focus, with the BCCI seeking feedback from all IPL franchises on the rule.The franchises have been asked to share their views as the BCCI looks to understand the thinking at the franchise level. The rule has been a subject of debate, particularly over its impact on the balance between bat and ball and the role of all-rounders.The IPL Governing Council and broadcasters could also be in the picture, as the BCCI could look at the issue from different perspectives.
Earlier, several prominent players had also objected to the Impact Player rule and raised concerns over its impact on the game.
Rohit Sharma had said, “I am not a big fan of Impact sub rule. It is going to hold all-rounders back, eventually cricket is played by 11 players, not 12 players.”
Virat Kohli had also spoken against the rule, saying, “I have never experienced anything like it where bowlers think they will concede a four or a six every ball.” He added, “There is a beauty in having an equal battle between bat and ball.”
Axar Patel had said, “I don’t like this rule, honestly, because I am an all-rounder.” He also explained that teams could choose a specialist batter or bowler instead of an all-rounder because of the rule.
Shubman Gill had said, “Personally, for me, I don’t think there should be an impact player. I think cricket in general is an 11-player game.” He also felt that adding an extra batter “takes the skill out of the game.”
For the franchises, the Impact Player rule is also linked to the team combinations they have built for the current three-year cycle. The BCCI’s current exercise is aimed at understanding the franchises’ stance.
The franchises were given August 31 as the deadline to submit their feedback. The BCCI has also sought feedback on PMOA, umpiring, practice sessions and playing conditions ahead of the next season.With the BCCI now seeking views from the franchises, all eyes will be on how the feedback shapes the discussion around the Impact Player rule.
