The second round of The Championships, Wimbledon brought more exciting action as players battled for a place in the third round. Some of the top seeds won comfortably, while others had to fight hard to stay in the tournament. There were long matches, close finishes and impressive performances, showing just how competitive Wimbledon has become.
Here are the key takeaways from the second round-
Alexander Zverev vs Alexander Blockx- 6-4, 6-7(8), 7-6(5), 7-6(7)
Alexander Zverev was made to work hard by Alexander Blockx, who impressed despite ending up on the losing side. The young Belgian matched Zverev’s intensity from the baseline and never gave up, winning the second set in a close tiebreak and pushing the next two sets into tiebreaks as well. There was very little to separate the two players throughout the match, but Zverev’s experience helped him stay calm in the biggest moments. He held his nerve in the final two tiebreaks to avoid an upset and secure his place in the second round.
Taylor Fritz vs Dušan Lajović- 6-3, 6-4, 6-3
Taylor Fritz barely gave Dušan Lajović a chance to settle, producing a dominant display from the very first game. His serve laid the foundation for the victory, allowing him to dictate play throughout the match, while his aggressive returning constantly kept Lajović under pressure. The Serbian struggled to create any momentum as Fritz controlled the rallies, earned regular break opportunities and comfortably closed out the match in straight sets without ever appearing troubled.
Otto Virtanen vs Ben Shelton – 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(10), 6-2, 7-6(9)
Otto Virtanen pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the opening round, beating Ben Shelton in a thrilling five-set match that stayed close from start to finish. Both players served well and matched each other throughout the contest, but Shelton missed several chances to take control of the match. Virtanen stayed calm, made the most of the opportunities that came his way and held his nerve in the deciding-set tiebreak. After an intense battle that was decided by the finest of margins, the Finn sealed a memorable victory through patience, composure and precise decision-making.
Iga Świątek vs Taylor Townsend- 6-1, 2-6, 6-3
“This was about believing I could do it” said Iga Świątek to the broadcasters after her hard fought match against Taylor Townsend. Coming back as the defending champion and playing in the centre court was far from easy for her.
After comfortably winning the first set, Iga Świątek was challenged as Taylor Townsend improved her game and pushed the match into a deciding third set. Świątek’s serve was not at its best, but she stayed calm during the important moments. Townsend kept up the fight and created several chances, but she could not make the most of them. Świątek raised her level again in the final set, took control when it mattered most and finished the match strongly to move into the second round.
Maya Joint vs Serena Williams- 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3
Maya Joint held her nerve to secure an impressive win over Serena Williams in a contest filled with momentum swings. Joint looked the more settled player early on and deservedly claimed the opening set, only for Serena to respond with trademark determination by edging a tense second-set tiebreak. Rather than letting the match slip away, the Australian reset quickly and continued to ask questions of Serena’s serve, creating regular pressure from the baseline. Serena’s fight kept the contest alive, but Joint stayed composed in the deciding set and finished strongly to earn a deserved place in the next round.
The third round will consist of exciting battles and will commence on the 1st of July 2026.
