Itanagar, 1st July: Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan arrived in flood-hit Arunachal Pradesh to assess the damage caused by heavy rains and landslides, but his scheduled aerial survey was deferred due to inclement weather.
The minister, who is visiting the Northeast on the directions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said the adverse weather had delayed the aerial inspection but would not affect the government’s commitment to assist every affected family.
“The weather may have grounded the helicopter today, but it cannot stop our determination. We will spend the entire day in the flood-affected regions of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, assessing the situation from the ground as well as from the air so that every affected farmer and every affected family receives the assistance they need,” Chouhan said after interacting with residents in Itanagar.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu will accompany Chouhan during Tuesday’s inspection of flood-affected areas.
After arriving in Itanagar, the Union Minister met local residents and public representatives, who highlighted extensive damage to crops, homes, roads and livelihoods caused by floods and landslides. Farmers informed him that standing crops, including oranges, bananas and paddy, had suffered heavy losses.
Assuring the affected families of full government support, Chouhan said no victim would be left behind in the relief and rehabilitation process and every effort would be made to ensure timely assistance.
The minister later chaired a high-level review meeting at the Itanagar Secretariat with senior officials of the Arunachal Pradesh government to assess flood damage, review ongoing relief operations and discuss rehabilitation measures.
He said the concerns of farmers and rural residents in the Northeast had reached the highest levels of the Central Government and reiterated that every possible assistance would be extended under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi.
On Tuesday, Chouhan will visit flood-hit villages, relief camps and agricultural fields across Arunachal Pradesh to assess losses firsthand. He will also undertake an aerial survey of affected areas in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam to review damage to rivers, embankments, roads, bridges and farmlands.
Later in the day, he will chair a review meeting in Guwahati with senior Assam government officials to discuss flood management, restoration of damaged infrastructure, relief distribution and compensation for affected farmers.
Emphasising the need for long-term preparedness, Chouhan said stronger embankments, improved drainage systems, better flood-management infrastructure, safer shelters and an effective crop insurance mechanism are essential to reduce future flood-related losses.
Appealing to residents of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam to remain resilient, the minister assured them that the Centre and the state governments would work in close coordination to restore normalcy and ensure comprehensive relief and rehabilitation for all affected families.
