The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially put an end to swirling rumors claiming that Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is on the verge of stepping away or retiring from ODIs. Addressing the reports surrounding the former India captain, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the veteran opener is not treating the upcoming series finale against England at the Lord’s as his farewell game. Additionally, those close to Rohit, speaking to RevSportz on condition of anonymity, labelled the buzz around his retirement as: “Rumours are rumours.” It is evident that the Hitman is in no mood to hang up his boots from international cricket.

In a conversation with RevSportz, Saikia firmly denied the narrative that the 39-year-old will call it quits this Sunday.

“There are a lot of speculations going on in the media about Rohit Sharma’s future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday,” Saikia told this website.

The clarification arrives amidst heavy media chatter — initially sparked by a news report suggesting that head coach Gautam Gambhir and the national selectors were planning a generational shift. According to these reports, the management was looking to phase out the former captain in favour of grooming rising star Yashasvi Jaiswal for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The narrative gained further traction following Rohit’s subdued performances in the first two matches of the ongoing series.

While Saikia did not explicitly guarantee Rohit’s participation in the 2027 World Cup, he made it abundantly clear that the captain’s ODI journey is not ending this weekend.

“Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, the Lord’s ODI won’t be his last match,” the BCCI secretary added. “Each member of Team India now is required to focus on the most crucial match of the ODI series at Lord’s on Sunday and ignore the wild speculations running in a few media circles and forums.”

Meanwhile, Rohit, on Friday, spent some quality time with his family in London. For now, the focus remains squarely on the pitch at Lord’s, with Rohit set to open for the Men in Blue in the vital series decider.
