Guwahati, 17th July: Assam Police on Friday arrested Aminul Islam, the main accused in the alleged sexual abuse of minor girls at a privately run madrassa in Bongaigaon district, two days after he went absconding following registration of the case.
The accused was arrested after an intensive search operation, while the investigation into the alleged abuse of students at the girls’ madrassa continues under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Bongaigaon Senior Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta said investigators are also examining the financial trail of the institution to determine whether it has links with organisations already under the police scanner.
Police have seized certain literature from the madrassa, which is being examined by experts to ascertain whether it was used for any form of radicalisation. Officials said no conclusions have been drawn and the primary focus of the investigation remains the POCSO case. A separate case may be registered if additional evidence emerges.
Earlier, the madrassa’s managing trustee was arrested, while two other trustees have been detained for questioning.
The privately run girls’ madrassa in Malegarh village was sealed by the district administration on Wednesday after allegations surfaced that minor students had been sexually abused. According to police, 149 girls were residing at the institution.
The allegations triggered widespread outrage in the village, with local residents entering the madrassa premises and damaging property before police intervened and restored order. The investigation is ongoing.
