Team RevSportz is now in Glasgow and, may I say, will be the biggest Indian media team on the ground to report on the Commonwealth Games. As a young organisation that is less than five years old, we have once again put together an ambitious plan for Glasgow. Sending a team of multiple journalists to the Games has been labelled foolish by some. How can we spend so much money? How will we generate revenue? Is this model sustainable?
As editor and founder, I honestly do not have answers to all these questions. All I know is that it is essential for multi-sport events to be covered in the best way possible, and one person can never do justice to a Games like this.
In my career, I have seen much larger crews from organisations such as NBC and the BBC cover major Games. The biggest lesson was that we needed reporters at as many venues as possible, while also having someone with the perspective to report on the culture surrounding the Games. That is when the plan was made: get more people out there with a strong knowledge of Olympic sports and ensure that every Indian event is covered in real time from the ground.
It is a clear case of disruption in sports media coverage. On days when Indian athletes are competing simultaneously across venues, we will be the only Indian team with reporters everywhere.
As part of the build-up, we travelled to Wolverhampton to meet the Indian weightlifting team. In what is a curtailed Commonwealth Games, weightlifting is expected to be India’s biggest medal-winning sport. I am predicting nine medals, including three golds, and it was essential that we produced a proper build-up.
The team was training at the University of Wolverhampton gym, and we spent the best part of half a day with them, watching the training and witnessing the effort that goes into preparing for a major Games. We had detailed conversations with stars such as Mirabai Chanu, who is also a dear friend, and head coach Vijay Sharma, who is cautiously optimistic about India’s chances. We also spoke to young athletes Gyaneshwari Yadav, Ajay Babu and Martina Devi. Our viewers can watch all of these interviews today as part of our special Commonwealth Games Conclave.
Over the next two weeks, we will produce real-time videos, break news, deliver exclusives and continue to push new boundaries in sports coverage. It will give us the confidence to scale even further in the future. Paris 2024 made Glasgow possible for us, and now we know we can do the same in Japan for the Asian Games in September. We know what it takes to deliver outstanding on-ground coverage, and we know our readers and viewers value it. We have a template, and we will keep building on it.
