India’s campaign at the China Open 2026 got off to a disappointing start after both HS Prannoy and Devika Sihag suffered first-round defeats on the opening day of the Super 1000 event on Tuesday.
Prannoy falls to Leong in men’s singles
Former World Championships bronze medallist Prannoy was outplayed by Malaysia’s Leong Jun Hao in straight games. Leong looked in control from the beginning and kept the rallies short with his attacking game.
Prannoy was struggling to find his rhythm, and eventually it became difficult for him to break his opponent’s momentum. The Malaysian claimed the opening game 21-10 before sealing the second 21-14 to win the match in just 32 minutes. The result marked an early end to Prannoy’s campaign and added to India’s disappointing start in the men’s singles event.
Devika pushes match to three games
In the women’s singles draw, Devika Sihag put up a close fight against Thailand’s experienced BusananOngbamrungphan, but she fell short in a three-game battle.
Busanan sealed a closely fought opening game 21-19 before Devika won the second 21-19, which forced the match into a decider. However, the Thai shuttler raised her level in the final game and closed out the match 21-13 after just over an hour on court.
With Prannoy and Devika exiting on the opening day, India will now look towards its remaining players, including PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, Ayush Shetty and the doubles pairs, to keep the country’s hopes alive at the China Open.
