Chennai, 19th Aug: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has announced a package of benefits for all 234 MLAs, including government vehicles, a monthly allowance for vehicle expenses and enhanced health insurance, saying the measures will help legislators serve their constituencies more effectively.
Addressing the Assembly, Vijay said each MLA would be provided with a government vehicle to facilitate frequent travel for constituency-related work and ensure “transparent and corruption-free governance.”
The Chief Minister said several legislators in the current Assembly are first-time MLAs from modest backgrounds and require logistical support to discharge their responsibilities efficiently.
In addition to the vehicles, the government announced a monthly allowance of ₹75,000 for driver salary, fuel and vehicle maintenance. MLAs will also receive a ₹25,000 monthly grant to hire a secretary for official work.
The government further increased the health insurance cover for MLAs from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh.
The announcement came after VCK MLA Jothimani urged the government to provide vehicles, stating that legislators could not effectively perform their duties without adequate logistical support.
The decision was welcomed by members of the ruling alliance. Congress MLA Tharagai Cuthbert described the announcement as a welcome move, while School Education Minister Raj Mohan said it would not only improve the functioning of MLAs but also generate employment for drivers and secretaries.
However, the opposition DMK criticised the decision, calling it an unnecessary financial burden on the state. DMK spokesperson A. Saravanan questioned the need for spending on vehicles and additional allowances for all legislators.
