India had a mixed day at the LI-NING China Masters Super 750 on Wednesday, with Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty leading the way with a comfortable win. Kidambi Srikanth and Tanvi Sharma also moved into the second round, while Lakshya Sen suffered a heavy defeat.
Satwik and Chirag made a strong start to their men’s doubles campaign, beating Malaysia’s Junaidi Arif and Kang Khai Xing 21-11, 21-16 in the opening round.
The Indian pair controlled the match from the start. They used their attacking game and quick movement to take the first game without much trouble. The second game was close with both pairs level at 13-13. Satwik and Chirag then raised their intensity to take control and finish the match in straight games in a 40 minute game.
They will next face France’s Christo Popov and Toma Junior Popov, who defeated Chinese Taipei’s Fang-Chih Lee and Fang-Jen Lee 21-18, 21-7. For Satwik and Chirag, the win is a positive start after their quarter-final exit at the BWF World Championships in New Delhi.
In the men’s singles, Srikanth also advanced after beating Chinese Taipei’s Chi Yu Jen 21-16, 21-15. He stayed in control throughout the match and closed it out in straight games. He will next face Victor Lai who defeated Lakshya Sen in the round of 32.
Lakhsya went down 14-21, 7-21 to Canadian shuttler in just 38 minutes. He struggled to find his rhythm and made several errors as Lai dominated the match. The defeat was Lakshya’s third loss against Lai.
India also had a positive result in women’s singles as Tanvi Sharma defeated Denmark’s Amalie Schulz 21-16, 21-17 to book her place in the pre quarter-finals. She will now face Japan’s world No. 9 Tomoka Miyazaki.
Devika Sihag, on the other hand, was beaten by Bulgaria’s Kaloyana Nalbantova 18-21, 15-21.
In mixed doubles, Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto produced a dominant performance, beating Thailand’s Tonnakorn Saeheng and Tonnicha Saeheng 21-8, 21-9. The pair will face Chinese Taipei’s Liu Kuang Heng and Hsu Yin Hui in the next round.
Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Gadde were knocked out after losing 16-21, 18-21 to Chinese Taipei’s Wu Guan Xun and Lee Chia Hsin.
