Comedian Samay Raina has received widespread praise online after a clip from the latest episode of India’s Got Latent showed him calling out a misogynistic remark from an audience member.
The reaction comes amid criticism faced by comedian Pranit More over his response to a controversial exchange during one of his stand-up shows, where an audience member made remarks about expecting something in return after spending ₹370 on biryani during a date.
Samay Raina’s response goes viral
In the latest episode of India’s Got Latent Season 2, featuring actors Alia Bhatt and Sharvari as guests, Samay interacted with the audience and asked, “What does a girl like the most in a guy?”
An audience member replied, “Paisa (money).”
While some people laughed, Alia appeared unimpressed and asked who made the comment. Samay immediately responded with a joke aimed at the audience member, saying, “Gareeb aadmi ne kaha hoga” (Some broke man must have said that).
The comeback drew laughter from the panel and audience, while the clip quickly spread across social media.
Several users praised Samay for challenging the stereotype, with some comparing his response to Pranit More’s handling of a previous controversy.
₹370 biryani controversy
The controversy involving Pranit began during a Gurugram stand-up show where an audience member, Himanshu Jangra, shared a story about a date.
He claimed that after spending ₹370 on biryani, he expected something in return and questioned whether the expense was “worth it”. The comment was followed by laughter from parts of the audience, including Pranit.
After the video went viral, critics accused the exchange of promoting misogynistic attitudes and objecting to Pranit’s description of it as “Peak Gurgaon Content”.
The backlash later escalated after the Maharashtra Cyber Police registered cases against Pranit and Himanshu over allegations linked to obscenity and sexual harassment. The National Commission for Women also took note of the matter.
Return of India’s Got Latent
Samay Raina returned with Season 2 of India’s Got Latent after removing previous episodes from YouTube following controversy around influencer Ranveer Allahbadia’s remarks on the show last year.
The new season’s opening episode featured Alia Bhatt, Sharvari and comedian Aashish Solanki as guests and is available on YouTube and Netflix.
