Shillong, 18th July: The Meghalaya government will introduce a resolution in the State Assembly to formally oppose and prohibit uranium mining, with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reiterating that the state has never approved uranium extraction.
Announcing the decision, Sangma said the proposed resolution would reaffirm the government’s long-standing opposition to uranium mining and remove any ambiguity surrounding the issue.
“The Meghalaya government has consistently maintained its stand against uranium mining. We have never approved uranium mining, and the Assembly resolution will formally oppose and ban any such activity in the state,” the Chief Minister said.
He said the move was intended to address public concerns over the environmental, ecological and social impact of uranium mining while providing a clear policy direction on the issue.
Uranium mining has remained a politically and socially sensitive subject in Meghalaya for decades, with civil society organisations, local communities and pressure groups opposing such projects over concerns about radiation risks, environmental degradation, displacement of indigenous communities and public health.
Successive state governments have faced repeated demands to clarify their position whenever the issue resurfaced.
Sangma said the government’s priority is to protect Meghalaya’s fragile ecology and the interests of its people while ensuring sustainable and environmentally responsible development.
The proposed resolution is expected to be tabled in the State Assembly, formally reinforcing the government’s commitment to preventing uranium mining and preserving the state’s natural resources.
