The International Cricket Council (ICC) has paid homage to the legendary West Indies all-rounder Sir Garfield Sobers who passed away at the age of 89 just days before his 90th birthday on Friday .
ICC Chairman Jay Shah has expressed his condolences saying the cricket world had lost one of its biggest icons.
“Today, the cricket world has lost one of its greatest icons. Sir Garfield Sobers was not only the finest all-rounder the game has ever known, but one of the greatest cricketers in history.” Shah said in a official statement.
He added: “His remarkable ability to influence a match in every facet of the game set him apart from his peers. Whether with the bat, ball or in the field, Sir Garfield embodied excellence, and his achievements continue to define the standard to which generations of cricketers aspire.”
Sobers made his first-class debut at the age of 16 in 1954 and within a year he made his international debut. At the age of 21 he scored an unbeaten 365 in a Test innings which was the highest individual Test score of that time. He also became the first batter to hammer six sixes in an over in first-class cricket. During his marvellous Test career, Sobers played 93 matches where he scored 8,032 runs, including 26 centuries, took 235 wickets and held to 109 catches.
Shah further added: “On behalf of the International Cricket Council, I extend our deepest condolences to Sir Garfield’s family, friends, Cricket West Indies and cricket fans around the world. He will be remembered with immense admiration and gratitude, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.”
