“It’s part and parcel of the journey” – Davina Perrin on Women’s T20 World Cup snub

England young batter Davina Perrin has opened up about her omission from the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup squad, admitting she is not surprised by the decision as she failed to make the most of her opportunities during the winter.

Speaking to the Press Association, the 19-year-old revealed that she was informed about the decision. “I didn’t get a phone call, I got a message just as they were about to announce selection,” Perrin said. “It was more just ‘keep scoring runs’, pretty short and sweet.”

Perrin was one of the contenders considered for the World Cup squad after her stunning 42-ball century in The Hundred last year. However, this year England opted for more experienced players for the global tournament.

Perrin had a disappointing winter campaign. She managed just 48 runs from five innings at an average of 9.60 and a strike rate of 111.62 in the WBBL. Her performances made it difficult for her to cement a place in the 15-player squad.

Despite the setback, Perrin understands the selectors’ call.

“It’s part and parcel of the journey. I had opportunities over the winter in the Big Bash but I didn’t quite take those. You want to be involved in (World Cups) but it was more of a glimmer of hope than anything,” she said.

England will face Sri Lanka in the tournament opener on June 12 in Birmingham.
