It was perhaps the best gift the Indian men’s hockey team could have given their fans back home on August 15.
India have a special connection with Independence Day. In 1936, the legendary Indian team won Olympic gold in Berlin on August 15. Ninety years later, on another Independence Day, Harmanpreet Singh and his teammates began their 2026 Hockey World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win over Wales.
It was the kind of start India needed before the competition gets tougher.
Wales began brightly, making two penetrations into the Indian circle in the opening five minutes. But after that, the game largely belonged to India. Harmanpreet Singh and his teammates looked well prepared, moved the ball around confidently in midfield and made good use of their penalty-corner opportunities.
India took the lead in the eighth minute through Sanjay Rana. Playing in his first senior World Cup, Rana produced a powerful drag-flick from a penalty corner that went through the Welsh goalkeeper’s legs.
Interestingly, Harmanpreet was on the bench when India scored their first goal. It was another indication that Craig Fulton has worked on options beyond his captain when it comes to penalty corners.
Three minutes later, Harmanpreet returned to the pitch and made an immediate impact. India won another penalty corner and the captain unleashed a fierce drag-flick that gave the goalkeeper no chance. India were 2-0 up inside the opening quarter.
India continued to control the game in the second quarter, enjoying a significant share of possession and creating opportunities through quick counter-attacks. That transition game is one of the key features of Fulton’s system. India created enough chances to have added more goals, but their finishing let them down.
The second half began in much the same way, with India controlling possession and keeping Wales under pressure. Their persistence finally paid off towards the end of the third quarter.
With just two minutes remaining, another penalty corner fell India’s way. Harmanpreet stepped up again and found the back of the net with another well-executed drag-flick to make it 3-0.
Wales came out with greater urgency in the final quarter. They pushed forward and earned a penalty corner, but Mohit HS, making his senior World Cup debut, produced an excellent save after coming off the bench.
Wales continued to search for a way back into the game and eventually found it after a tense passage inside the Indian circle. The Welsh players claimed the ball had crossed the line. After a review, the goal was awarded, bringing Wales back to 3-1.
The final quarter saw Wales push harder, but India held on to secure a comfortable opening victory.
The result gives India the perfect start to their World Cup campaign. More importantly, they showed several encouraging signs — control in midfield, discipline in defence, quality from penalty corners and the ability to create chances through the counter.
The real test, however, comes next.
India face England in their second Pool D game on August 17. England will provide a far tougher challenge, and the result could have a major bearing on who finishes top of the group.
