England endured another difficult day at Lord’s, finishing on 130/6 and still requiring 327 runs to avoid defeat after India declared with a commanding lead of 457. Amid an otherwise forgettable outing for the hosts, Sophie Ecclestone emerged as England’s standout performer with a five-wicket haul in India’s second innings, preventing the visitors from running away with an even bigger total. However, with only Amy Jones offering resistance with the bat, England head into the final day staring at an uphill battle to save the Test.
‘I don’t really imagine this England team without Heather Knight’
Even as England finished Day 3 staring at defeat, Sophie Ecclestone experienced a deeply emotional personal milestone. The left-arm spinner claimed a five-wicket haul in India’s second innings to earn a place on the Lord’s Honours Board, but admitted the day was dominated by the impending retirements of Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont.
“I even broke into tears when I ran onto the field today,” Ecclestone revealed. “It was the last time I was walking out with Heather and Tammy. Heather gave me my debut cap and has been with me through all the highs and lows over the last 10 years. I’m forever grateful for everything she’s done for me.”
Ecclestone admitted it would be difficult to imagine the England dressing room without Knight.
“I don’t really imagine this England team without Heather Knight at the moment. But she’s happy with her decision, she’s excited for what comes next, and there are plenty of young players coming through who’ll step up.”
‘Yastika batted unbelievably’
Although Ecclestone finished with five wickets, she was quick to credit Yastika Bhatia for a superb maiden Test century that put India firmly in control.
“Yastika batted unbelievably,” she said. “All credit goes to her. She deserved that hundred. She always has a smile on her face when she plays cricket, and it’s really cool to see her on the Honours Board.”
She also praised Kranti Gaud, whose five-wicket haul in England’s first innings earned her a place alongside Bhatia.
“For people growing up and seeing women on the Honours Board at Lord’s, it’s pretty special. It gives young girls something to aspire to.”
‘Bowling is one of my favourite things to do’
Having returned after a disrupted build-up, Ecclestone admitted it had not been an easy week physically but said bowling remained her greatest joy.
“It’s been a pretty weird build-up. I had one training session before coming into this match, which is very different from what I’m used to,” she said.
“Sometimes I hate cricket, but I love bowling. Even though it was a tough day, I loved being out there.”
On reaching her five-wicket milestone, she added: “There wasn’t much going through my head. It’s been a long week. I just kept bowling. Getting that fifth wicket was a relief, and then I realised I’d made it onto the Lord’s Honours Board.”
‘It’s been a whirlwind of a week’
Reflecting on the bigger picture, Ecclestone described the week as one she would cherish despite England’s difficult position.
“So much has happened this week,” she said. “Heather and Tammy announcing their retirements, playing the first women’s Test at Lord’s — it’s been a whirlwind.”
“I’ll probably look back on this in a few weeks or months and think, ‘that was pretty cool’. We’re very lucky to have been part of it, and hopefully women’s Test cricket at Lord’s continues.”
