Hamstring Woes: Kohli Likely Out, Rohit’s Participation in Doubt for Afghanistan ODIs

Virat Kohli is likely to be ruled out of the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, and Rohit Sharma’s participation is also in doubt due to hamstring injuries. Rohit suffered his injury while playing for the Mumbai Indians against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026, forcing him to miss multiple matches. Meanwhile, it is understood that Kohli picked up a hamstring niggle during the tournament’s final. Although Rohit returned to the Mumbai Indians’ playing XI in the latter phase of the competition, he only featured as an Impact Player, despite the coaching staff maintaining that the decision was strictly based on ‘team combination.’

Both Rohit and Hardik Pandya were selected for the Afghanistan series, pending fitness clearance at the Centre of Excellence (CoE). Rohit has yet to report to the CoE in Bengaluru. Hardik may also fail to receive clearance to bowl his full quota of 10 overs, though this will entirely depend on the results of his upcoming fitness test. For Kohli, participation in the Afghanistan ODIs looks unlikely, as he will not have enough time to fully recover from his injury. Furthermore, if he is selected for the upcoming ODI squad against England, his inclusion will also be subject to fitness clearance.

The ODI squad for the series is scheduled to assemble in Mullanpur on June 9 for a couple of training sessions before heading to Dharamsala for the opening match.
