The excitement of the FIFA World Cup is reaching far beyond the football field as many parents across different countries are naming their newborns after their favourite players.
In Peru, football-inspired baby names have become a growing trend. One of the biggest surprises is parents are naming their child after Norway striker Erling Haaland, even though Peru did not qualify for the tournament. Parents are also inspired by popular stars like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar.
In Argentina, the World Cup has also influenced baby names. Lionel, Enzo and Emiliano have become some of the most popular names for boys which highlight the impact of the national team’s successful campaign.
In Mexico a birth certificate shared on social media showed a baby girl with a name inspired by several footballers, including Julián Quiñones, Gilberto Mora and Erling Haaland. However, officials have not confirmed whether the document is genuine.
Experts say naming children after famous footballers is not new and has happened for many years.
