FIFA has handed suspensions to three Argentina players and Spain midfielder Gavi following a clash between the two teams after the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes received the heaviest punishment, with a 10-match ban and a $90,000 fine. Defender Nahuel Molina was suspended for seven matches and fined the same amount, while Thiago Almada received a one-match ban and a $30,000 fine.
Spain’s Gavi was also handed a one-match suspension and fined $30,000 for unsporting behaviour.
The incident took place after Spain defeated Argentina in the final in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 19. Paredes pushed Gavi to the ground as Spain celebrated their victory, triggering a wider confrontation involving players and members of both teams.
Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was also punished with a three-match suspension and a $30,000 fine after being charged with assault. Ayala had apologised for his involvement in the incident.
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) was fined $321,000 for several disciplinary breaches during the tournament. The sanctions also relate to a banner displayed by some Argentina players following their semi-final victory over England, referring to the Falkland Islands.
As part of the punishment, Argentina will play their next two home matches with stadium capacity limited to 50 per cent.
