New Delhi, 2nd Nov. The alarming surge in pollution levels in Delhi has become a pressing health concern, with a recent survey indicating that 69% of families in the capital and the National Capital Region (NCR) have at least one member suffering from pollution-related ailments. Following Diwali celebrations, the Air Quality Index (AQI) soared to a staggering 999 on the night of the festival, marking the highest recordable level in various parts of Delhi and NCR.
Conducted by LocalCircles, the survey gathered over 21,000 responses from residents of Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad. Findings revealed that 69% of families reported members experiencing sore throats or coughs, while 62% noted at least one individual with a burning sensation in the eyes. Additionally, 46% of families reported symptoms such as a running nose or nasal congestion. Other health issues included breathing difficulties or asthma (31%), headaches (31%), anxiety and concentration difficulties (23%), and sleep disturbances (15%). In contrast, 31% of respondents reported no health issues due to pollution.
Comparative data from a similar survey conducted on October 19 showed a significant increase in health complaints over the two-week period. The percentage of individuals experiencing sore throats or coughs surged from 36% to 69%. While only 23% of participants indicated they would use air purifiers during this pollution spike, an equal percentage expressed their intent to endure the pollution without taking measures. Some respondents stated they would continue their routine activities while wearing masks outdoors, increase their intake of immunity-boosting foods and drinks, or even travel for parts of the month. Notably, the willingness to use air purifiers increased from 18% to 23% over the same period.
The ongoing pollution crisis in Delhi calls for immediate attention and action, as residents grapple with the adverse health effects of deteriorating air quality.
