Cruz Hewitt, the 17-year-old son of former world No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam champion Lleyton Hewitt, has earned his first ATP Tour victory with a straight-set win over American Marcos Giron in the opening round of the Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington.
Cruz secured his victory 6-3, 6-4 in 74 minutes. By defeating the world No. 86, Giron, Cruz has now progressed to the second round of the ATP 500 event.
Through this win, he also becomes the youngest player to win a main draw match in Washington since Kei Nishikori in 2007.
Following his victory, he recreated a famous celebration from his father – a right-arm bicep curl.
While speaking to the media, Cruz acknowledged his father’s guidance and addressed the famous celebration, stating: “He just always did it, and when I was little, I’ve just always seen it. It’s cool to be able to do that now because obviously my dad has been a huge part of where I am today,” as quoted by the BBC.
Cruz now advances to the second round, where he is set to face the winner of the match between Australia’s Alex de Minaur and Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The win marks another career milestone for the youngster in his early professional career as he continues to progress on the ATP Tour.
