A change is on the cards in the BCCI senior men’s selection committee. Shiv Sundar Das, the former India opener and a current selector from the East Zone, is likely on his way out. There’s no room for boardroom intrigue here though. The 48-year-old from Odisha, who played 23 Tests and four ODIs, is completing his term. It is learnt that the BCCI might soon put out an advertisement for the post that is about to fall vacant.
As per the BCCI constitution, a selector can continue up to four years in a selection committee, junior and senior. The cumulative term is five years, the two committees combined. Das was appointed as a member of the senior selection committee in January 2023. So, his term will be over in December this year. Earlier, the formation of the selection panel used to be the BCCI AGM-specific, which usually takes place in September every year. But now, following the overhaul in the cricket board’s constitution as per the Lodha Committee recommendations, things for the selectors have changed to contract-specific. Once the advertisement is put out and based on the applications received, a new selector would be appointed from the East Zone.
Ajit Agarkar’s case is apparently a bit more complicated. The current chairman of the selectors assumed office in July 2023. So, by the rule book, he can continue until June 2027. Then again, Agarkar was said to be given a three-year contract, as he was brought in mid-term after Chetan Sharma had resigned. The former India all-rounder was reportedly given a three-month extension in June this year. There’s no official confirmation from the BCCI in this regard, but if that is the case, then Agarkar’s tenure would be over in September.
It is learnt that no discussion has taken place between the BCCI and Agarkar yet regarding another extension. But even if his tenure is extended further, it can’t go beyond June 2027 as per the existing BCCI constitution. To prolong his stay as the chief selector until the ODI World Cup next year, which is in October-November, the BCCI might have to tweak the rule.
Whether that would be done for the sake of continuity needs to be seen. Also, it’s important to know if Agarkar is willing to seek an extension.
