Florida: A British woman who travelled from England to the United States after months of online contact with a man she met on a fetish website was later found murdered and buried in a shallow grave in Florida, according to investigators. The accused, Dwain Hall, has been charged with kidnapping and first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty and could face the death penalty if convicted.
Authorities allege that the victim, Sonia Exelby, a 32-year-old music tutor from Portsmouth, travelled to the United States believing Hall would fulfil her desire to be tortured and killed. Investigators say the case involves extensive online communications, financial transactions and evidence recovered from electronic devices. The trial is expected to begin later this year.
Police allege victim travelled to meet online contact
According to investigators in Florida, Sonia travelled to the United States after months of communicating with Hall through a fetish website, where he allegedly used the online name “alphasadist”.
Police said evidence recovered from Sonia’s computer indicated that she intended to meet individuals she believed would carry out violent acts against her. Investigators also stated that the recovered material suggested she expected to be sexually abused, tortured and murdered.
Authorities said Sonia had reportedly struggled with mental health issues for several years before developing an online relationship with Hall. Investigators allege the pair exchanged messages involving violent fantasies, with Hall allegedly directing aspects of her daily routine.
Family members later told police that Sonia had become increasingly withdrawn in the months leading up to her disappearance.
Previous trip reportedly interrupted
Court documents state that Sonia first attempted to travel to the United States in August 2024 after communicating with several online individuals through Telegram.
That trip was reportedly interrupted after a friend alerted Hampshire Police in the United Kingdom. Officers allegedly seized her phone and laptop as part of the intervention.
Investigators believe Sonia later resumed communication with Hall and arranged another visit to Florida.
Alleged financial arrangement
According to investigators, Hall informed Sonia that he owed US$10,000 to the Internal Revenue Service.
Police allege Sonia agreed to pay him US$4,000 after Hall claimed he would help remove what he described as the “trappings of humanity”, a phrase investigators believe referred to her desire to die.
Authorities said this financial arrangement forms part of the evidence in the murder investigation.
Journey to Florida
On October 10 last year, Sonia flew from Heathrow Airport to Gainesville, Florida, with a return ticket booked for the following Monday.
Investigators allege Hall collected her from the airport and drove her to an isolated cottage near Reddick in Marion County.
Police said Hall purchased several items around the time of Sonia’s arrival, including a shovel, rope, parachute cord, gun-cleaning supplies and deodorant spray.
Detectives also alleged that Hall attempted multiple transactions using Sonia’s bank cards before eventually receiving a transfer of US$1,200 into his roadside assistance business account.
Messages allegedly sent before her death
While staying at the cottage, Sonia allegedly managed to contact an online friend through Discord while Hall was in the shower.
According to investigators, she wrote that she had expected the act to happen quickly before ending the conversation with the words, “My time’s up.”
Police also said Sonia later sent another message claiming Hall had taken her phone and told her there was “no way out” unless she shot him.
In the same conversation, she reportedly wrote that she was “so so scared” before again ending the exchange by stating that her time was up.
Video and forensic evidence
Investigators said they recovered a deleted four-minute video allegedly recorded by Hall.
According to police, the recording showed Sonia appearing bruised and emotionally distressed while stating that she had travelled voluntarily.
Authorities said the deleted recording was successfully recovered during the forensic examination of electronic devices.
GPS data allegedly placed Hall in a wooded area near Ocala for approximately one hour.
Five days later, investigators discovered Sonia’s body buried in a shallow grave.
Police said the post-mortem examination found she had sustained four stab wounds. Investigators also allege that Sonia’s blood was found on Hall’s customised steel knife.
Murder charges filed
Hall was arrested in November last year and charged with kidnapping and first-degree murder.
According to investigators, Hall later claimed during recorded jail telephone conversations with his wife that he believed he had done nothing wrong and had merely tried to give Sonia what she wanted.
Sonia’s family strongly rejected that claim. They said they wanted her to be remembered not for the circumstances surrounding her death, but as a compassionate, kind and deeply loved person whose life was tragically cut short.
Investigation continues
The case has drawn international attention because of its alleged links to online communities involving violent fantasies and the complex issues surrounding mental health and online exploitation.
Prosecutors are expected to rely on digital communications, financial records, forensic evidence and witness testimony during the upcoming trial. Hall continues to maintain his innocence after pleading not guilty to all charges.
