Bhubaneswar Crowned Best Public Transport City at Urban Mobility India 2024

Bhubaneswar has been recognized as the “City with the Best Public Transport System” at the 17th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference and Exhibition 2024 held at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The conference concluded on October 27, 2024, celebrating excellence in urban transport across the country.

Srinagar also received accolades, winning the title of “City with the Best Non-Motorized Transport System.” The event highlighted significant advancements in sustainable urban mobility solutions, with various awards presented in different categories to acknowledge the achievements of cities and states in improving their transport systems.

During the valedictory session, Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs and Power, Shri Manohar Lal, emphasized the progress made under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. He noted that India now ranks third globally in operational rail networks and highlighted the upcoming expansion of the metro system. He affirmed that the Prime Minister’s vision of the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) is becoming a reality, enhancing urban mobility throughout the country.

Shri Tokhan Sahu, the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, praised the UMI initiative, which has been addressing urban mobility issues since 2008. He celebrated the recent milestone of surpassing one crore daily ridership in metro trains across India and reiterated the government’s commitment to achieving a “Viksit Bharat 2047.”

The UMI awards, recognizing excellence in urban transport, were presented in various categories, including:

  1. City with the Most Sustainable Transport System: Kochi
  2. City with the Best Public Transport System: Bhubaneswar
  3. City with the Best Non-Motorized Transport System: Srinagar
  4. City with the Best Safety and Security System: Gandhinagar
  5. City with the Best Intelligent Transport System (ITS): Surat
  6. City with the Most Innovative Financing Mechanism: Jammu
  7. City with Best Record of Public Involvement in Transport: Bengaluru
  8. Metro Rail with the Best Multimodal Integration: Bengaluru
  9. Metro Rail with the Best Passenger Services and Satisfaction: Mumbai

Additionally, Shri Manohar Lal announced Gurugram, Haryana, as the venue for the 18th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference and Exhibition in 2025.

The UMI Conference, organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs through the Institute of Urban Transport (India), attracted over 2,200 delegates and featured 76 exhibitors showcasing best practices and innovative technologies in urban transport from both Indian and international companies.

This year’s conference focused on the theme of “Standardisation and Optimisation of Urban Transport Solutions,” addressing critical issues and challenges in urban mobility, and emphasizing the importance of integrating various modes of transport.

The awards and discussions at the UMI 2024 Conference signify a strong commitment to improving urban transport infrastructure and services across India, paving the way for a sustainable and efficient future in urban mobility.
