Sometimes, sport isn’t about all the mundane stats that are thrown at you. It is about how a sporting contest elevates our senses and takes us to an imaginary world to visualise different aspects of the one-to-one battle. One such keen tussle was witnessed between Tilak Varma and Gurnoor Brar in the 2026 Duleep Trophy semi-final played at the Centre of Excellence.
An incident from the second innings of the game provides a snapshot of the engrossing battle: with fluid strides, Gurnoor charged to the crease, pounded the deck hard and got one to nip away slightly from the left-hand batter, Tilak. There was a muted appeal for a caught behind too, only for it to be turned down. Tilak, however, erased the false shot induced by Gurnoor from his mind and continued to bat with a calm countenance, steering South Zone to a memorable win.
The Gurnoor-Tilak contest extended far beyond just the final innings. In South Zone’s first innings, the conditions seemed to favour North Zone’s formidable pace attack. At one stage, Gurnoor had bowled a couple of peaches to dislodge R Smaran and Narayan Jagadeesan and reduce South to 80 for five. The only thing was that North’s pacers still had to find a way through the ‘Rock of Hyderabad’, Tilak.
With the ball moving in the air, and more so off the seam, Tilak had his share of edges while up against Gurnoor. However, it is also true that he waited and waited for Gurnoor and Co. to either bowl on his pads or offer width, allowing him to maximise every loose ball on offer. Even when the conditions got better for batting, Gurnoor kept up his intensity levels, hitting Tilak’s bat hard on impact. Meanwhile, Tilak maintained his concentration levels to essay an undefeated hundred. Although Tilak took the bragging rights, having remained unbeaten in both innings, Gurnoor once again gave a glimpse of his burgeoning potential to extract life out of a slow deck.
“There is nothing as such. We are good friends,” Tilak smiled when asked about his duel with Gurnoor. “When we are in the field, the only thing that matters is bat and ball. He was bowling quick today as well; they were coming hard at us. I was playing with patience, close to the body. That was a good reply to them.
“I saw that spell through and then it was easier to bat on. The conditions always change here in Bengaluru, open ground. When we batted, you would have seen the conditions, slightly drizzling. It was also windy. It was challenging to bat on.”
Tilak’s ability to soak up the pressure while facing quality pace bowling gives an inkling that he might one fine day play Test cricket for India. “The love for Test cricket is there in my blood,” he said. “I have always loved to play red-ball cricket. I never dreamt of playing white-ball cricket for India but that’s God’s plan. I have debuted in ODIs and T20Is but the thing is my strength is always in red-ball cricket.”
That quote from Tilak matches how he batted against Gurnoor and Co. at the CoE: gritty, patient and with a sheer passion for playing the longest format.
