A new kind of cafe culture is taking shape in South Korea as runner-friendly cafes emerge near some of the country’s most popular running routes.
From Seoul’s Han River, Olympic Park and Seoul Forest to Busan’s Haeundae Beach and the coast of Jeju Island, cafes are increasingly welcoming runners with special services and offers.
A run can now earn you a coffee discount
Some cafes offer discounts to customers who show proof that they have completed a run on the same day. Others provide services such as bag storage, making it easier for runners to stop by after exercising.
The idea is to turn a post-run coffee or brunch into part of a wider wellness routine.
For cafe owners, however, the trend appears to be about more than attracting customers.
Owners want runners to feel at home
Kang Dong-won, owner of Evan Coffee in Seoul’s Mapo District, introduced runner-friendly services in May 2025 because of his own interest in running.
He said cafes serving runners have a naturally limited customer base and that many operators are likely motivated more by their enthusiasm for running culture than by profits.
Cafe RIDAR in Seoul’s Yongsan District also offers runners discounts, bag storage and even running sunglasses rentals.
Some cafes are bringing runners together
The trend is moving beyond discounts and facilities, with cafes also creating running communities.
Momos Coffee’s Marine City branch in Busan holds free group runs for staff and customers on the first Saturday of every month. Selected FOURB branches organise similar runs on the last Saturday.
FOURB has been running with its customers for more than five years, according to its operations support head Kim Se-young.
Running is becoming part of everyday life
Cafe operators say the growing number of runner-friendly spaces reflects a wider shift towards healthier lifestyles.
Lee Jae-young, a manager at Cafe RIDAR, said runners once found it difficult to sit in cafes while still sweaty after a run. Today, more businesses are creating spaces where they feel welcome.
The growing cafe-runner connection suggests that running in Korea is evolving from a hobby into a social and lifestyle culture, with coffee shops becoming unexpected meeting points for the country’s growing community of runners. #Running #SouthKorea #CafeCulture #Wellness #Fitness #Lifestyle
