India will host the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in 2027, with Mumbai and Vadodara set to stage the six-team tournament from February 14 to 28.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed on Wednesday that the Cricket Club of India (CCI) in Mumbai and the Vadodara International Cricket Stadium will serve as the two venues for the landmark event. The tournament was originally awarded to Sri Lanka but has now been moved to India.
The six participating teams are Australia, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka. They secured their places based on their positions in the ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings at the July 6 qualification cut-off.
The teams will play a round-robin league, with the top two sides progressing directly to the final on February 28. The competition will comprise 16 matches.
India’s selection as host follows an evaluation of bids from India, Bangladesh and South Africa. The ICC said its Board ratified the decision on September 2 after considering its established host evaluation criteria.
Sri Lanka’s hosting plans were affected as the country continues to undertake reforms outlined at the ICC Annual Conference in July.
The tournament’s move to India adds another major women’s cricket event to the country after India hosted the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup, which saw the hosts win their maiden global title.
The Champions Trophy is part of the ICC’s expanded women’s international calendar, which features a major global women’s event every year from 2025 through 2028. The 2027 tournament was initially moved to the February window by the ICC Board in June, shifting it from its earlier June-July slot.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah said the inaugural Champions Trophy would provide an additional incentive for teams to climb the rankings while helping create greater momentum and consistency for women’s cricket.
With the tournament now coming to India, the country’s fans will get another opportunity to watch the world’s leading women’s teams compete on home soil, less than 18 months after India’s historic World Cup triumph.
