India batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has opened up about his love for bowling and cheekily took a dig at his East Zone captain, Ishan Kishan, for underestimating his bowling skills in the ongoing Duleep Trophy.
Sooryavanshi picked up a couple of wickets in East Zone’s win over North-East Zone in Bengaluru. The 15-year-old was handed the ball by Ishan, and the left-arm spinner responded by taking two wickets in the space of four deliveries.
With wickets hard to come by for East Zone, Ishan was forced to think outside the box, and Sooryavanshi was called upon to make the breakthrough.
“If you ask batters, they always enjoy bowling,” Sooryavanshi cheekily said in a video shared by the BCCI. “A batter bowling or a bowler batting is enjoyable for the player. Wickets weren’t falling for the opposing team, so I was asked to bowl two or three overs. Ishan bhaiya felt like he was taking a risk by giving me the ball. But he doesn’t know that I am a wicket-taker.”
Sooryavanshi claimed his first wicket by flighting the delivery and pitching it slightly fuller, luring Kishan Lyngdoh out of his crease in an attempt to clear the field. However, Lyngdoh mistimed the shot towards point, where the fielder held on comfortably.
Just three deliveries later, Sooryavanshi struck again, sending down a faster ball that caught the outside edge of Imliwati Lemtur’s bat.
“In my mind, I only thought that even if I take five wickets, I am only getting three overs to bowl,” said Sooryavanshi. “I tried to bowl as best as I could, in one spot, and to finish my spell. It was a lot of fun because batting didn’t go so well in the last match, so contributing to the team with the ball was fun. When a batter takes a wicket, there is no greater enjoyment than that.”
East Zone will next face Central Zone at the Centre of Excellence, with Sooryavanshi looking to make a big contribution with the bat after failing in the previous game.
