The Toyohashi City General Gymnasium in Aichi Prefecture will welcome athletes from across Asia during the 2026 Asian Games. Located inside the Toyohashi Total Sports Park, the venue will host Karate and Taekwondo during the 20th edition of the Games.
The gymnasium was opened in 1989 and has since become an important sporting and community venue for the people of Toyohashi.
A venue at the heart of Toyohashi’s sporting culture
The Toyohashi City General Gymnasium has around 3,000 spectator seats across two floors. The first floor has around 1,000 movable seats, while the second floor has around 2,000 fixed seats, including spaces for wheelchair users.
The facility features a large main arena covering around 3,450 square metres, along with a smaller sub-arena, training rooms and other facilities.
The gymnasium was built as part of the Toyohashi Total Sports Park to provide residents with a venue for sports, competitions and community activities.
Over the years, it has hosted several indoor sports. It is also the home court of the San-en NeoPhoenix, a professional basketball team competing in Japan’s B.League.
The venue has also hosted women’s volleyball, W.League basketball, regional sumo tours and wheelchair basketball events.
During the Asian Games, however, the spotlight will turn to Karate and Taekwondo.
Both combat sports require athletes to combine technique, speed, precision and control. Hosting these events will give the gymnasium a major international role during the Games.
Toyohashi: A city with history and tradition
Toyohashi is located in southeastern Aichi Prefecture. The city has a long history as a castle town and was once part of the Yoshida Domain.
It also developed as an important post station along the historic Tokaido route connecting Edo, now Tokyo, with Kyoto.
Toyohashi’s identity combines traditional Japanese customs with its modern industrial character.
One of its most famous traditions is Tezutsu Hanabi, commonly known as hand-held fireworks. The tradition dates back around 450 years and involves performers holding large bamboo cylinders as fireworks burst around them.
The city is also an important transport and trade centre because of Mikawa Port, which handles large volumes of vehicle exports and imports.
More than a sports venue
The Toyohashi City General Gymnasium is used throughout the year by local residents, athletes and professional teams.
When major competitions are not taking place, its large indoor spaces can also be used for concerts, exhibitions, conventions and community programmes. Local sports and physical education activities are regularly held at the facility as well.
The Asian Games will now bring a new level of attention to the venue. For Indian fans, the gymnasium will be one to watch as athletes compete in Karate and Taekwondo, with medals and Asian Games glory on the line.
How to reach the venue
Toyohashi City General Gymnasium can be reached by train and bus. Public transport is recommended during the Asian Games due to road and parking restrictions around the venue.
By train: Reach Toyohashi Station, which is connected by the JR Tokaido Shinkansen, JR lines and Meitetsu Railway.
By bus: From Toyohashi Station, take a Toyohashi Railroad (Toyotetsu) bus towards Sogo Sports Koen.
