Beltangady: Venur police have apprehended a 46-year-old man who had allegedly been absconding after failing to appear before the court in connection with a case registered in 2008.
The accused has been identified as Mohammed Shareef, 46. He was wanted in connection with Venur police station Crime No. 71/2008, registered under Sections 457 and 380 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Accused failed to appear before court
According to police, Mohammed Shareef had failed to appear before the court during proceedings in the case and had remained absconding.
A warrant had subsequently been issued against him in connection with CC No. 535/2016. Police continued efforts to trace and apprehend him based on the warrant.
The case dates back to 2008 and was registered at Venur police station under provisions of the IPC relating to house-breaking by night and theft.
Police team apprehends accused
On August 13, Venur police successfully apprehended Mohammed Shareef.
The operation was carried out by a team comprising Venur police station Assistant Sub-Inspector Bennichan and Police Constable Basavaraj, along with Praveen M from the Beltangady Sub-Division office.
The team acted on the outstanding warrant and traced the accused after he had allegedly remained unavailable for the court proceedings.
The apprehension brings the long-pending warrant to the attention of the court and enables the judicial proceedings in the case to continue.
Produced before Beltangady court
Following his apprehension, Mohammed Shareef was produced before the Beltangady court on August 13.
After considering the matter, the judge remanded him to judicial custody.
The accused will now remain in judicial custody as the legal proceedings connected to the 2008 case continue.

The case against Mohammed Shareef was registered at Venur police station as Crime No. 71/2008 under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC.
The long gap between the registration of the case and the latest apprehension highlights the efforts of police to execute pending warrants and trace accused persons who fail to appear before courts.
Court proceedings in criminal cases require accused persons to comply with directions and appear when required. Failure to do so can result in warrants being issued by the court.
In this case, a warrant was issued in CC No. 535/2016 following the accused’s failure to appear for the proceedings.
Police continue warrant execution
The apprehension was carried out with the coordination of personnel from Venur police station and the Beltangady Sub-Division office.
Such operations are aimed at locating persons against whom court warrants remain pending and ensuring that they are brought before the appropriate judicial authority.
Following his production before the Beltangady court, the accused was remanded to judicial custody.
The case will now proceed according to the directions of the court, while further legal proceedings will determine the allegations against the accused.
