Ahead of their crucial Eliminator clash against Southern Brave in the ongoing Women’s Hundred on August 14 at The Oval, India’s star all-rounder Deepti Sharma opened up about her experience of representing Sunrisers Leeds in the competition.
The clash is a replay of last season’s final, where Sunrisers Leeds, then known as Northern Superchargers, defeated Southern Brave by seven wickets at Lord’s to win their maiden title.
Now, as Sunrisers Leeds look to defend their title, Deepti shared her experience of playing for the franchise in an interaction with JioStar.
“I was very excited when I was picked for Sunrisers Leeds because orange is my favourite colour,” she said. “So, it always feels good wherever I see orange. Playing on our home ground here in Leeds is special. The ground is full of Sunrisers fans, and everywhere I look, I see orange.
“I think the fans must also be enjoying watching us perform well at home. As a team, we really appreciate each other’s contributions, whether it’s a good innings or a tight bowling spell. We are enjoying that as a group. The more we learn from these experiences, the better it will be for us.”
Earlier in the league stage, Southern Brave defeated Sunrisers Leeds by five wickets in Leeds. However, heading into this clash, Sunrisers are riding a four-match winning streak, while Southern Brave have suffered three consecutive defeats.
Despite both teams finishing the league stage with 20 points, Sunrisers finished second and Brave third, thanks to their superior net run rate.
Deepti has enjoyed an impactful season so far, picking up 12 wickets in eight innings. She is currently joint-second on the highest wicket-takers’ list, with 10 of her 12 wickets coming in her last four games.
Speaking about how The Hundred is helping her grow as a player, Deepti said she is looking to make the most of the tournament ahead of the Asia Cup.
“There is still some time left before the Women’s Champions Trophy, which will be played in February 2027,” she said. “So, right now, my focus is on The Hundred. The Women’s Asia Cup starts on August 28, and that is an important tournament for the Indian team.
“Playing in The Hundred is giving me a great opportunity to work on my skills in all three departments — batting, bowling and fielding. I am trying to make the most of this tournament so that I can go into the Asia Cup well prepared. I am giving my best for Sunrisers Leeds, and that will help me grow as a player and also benefit the team in the long run.”
The Women’s Asia Cup is set to begin on August 28 in Dubai, with India placed in Group A alongside Hong Kong, Thailand and Pakistan.
