In just her second Women’s Hundred appearance, Orla Prendergast produced the third-best bowling figures for Welsh Fire Women in the tournament’s history.
The Ireland all-rounder produced figures of 4/18 against Manchester Super Giants in Manchester on Wednesday, helping bowl the hosts out for 85/9 – their lowest-ever first-innings total in the history of the competition.
Prendergast was sensational with the new ball. She dismissed skipper Meg Lanning for a golden duck with a beauty that nipped back from outside off and crashed into the top of off stump. She then added two more wickets in the powerplay before removing Richa Ghosh later in the innings to complete her four-wicket haul.
In the process, she became only the fourth Welsh Fire bowler to register a four-wicket haul in the Women’s Hundred.

It has been a remarkable few days for the 24-year-old. On August 2, Welsh Fire announced that regular captain Sophie Devine was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament with a calf injury. Prendergast was signed as her replacement and was immediately drafted into the playing XI for the clash against Southern Brave on August 3.
Although she had a quiet debut despite Welsh Fire’s victory, Prendergast made an instant impact in her second appearance, showing exactly why the franchise turned to the current world No. 4-ranked WT20I all-rounder.
Replacing a player of Devine’s stature is never easy, but Prendergast has made an encouraging start. While she did not have much to do with the bat as Welsh Fire chased down the target by seven wickets and nine balls to spare, her match-winning spell earned her the Player of the Match award.
Reflecting on her whirlwind start, Prendergast said: “I suppose it’s been a whirlwind last few days for myself to come and join, and two wins to go with it is exactly what you want.”
The victory strengthened Welsh Fire’s playoff hopes, with the side now sitting fourth on the table with 12 points from six matches.
