The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has announced the New Khelo India Scheme for 2026–31, describing it as the first phase of India’s long-term plan to improve its performance at the Olympic Games.
The scheme has been allocated ₹29,054 crore for the next five years, compared to ₹3,790 crore under the previous cycle. The number of athletes supported through Khelo India will also increase from 2,745 to around 27,000.
The revised scheme focuses on expanding sports infrastructure and improving access to training facilities. It includes the development of Olympic Training Centres, strengthening sports infrastructure in rural areas, and creating more opportunities for athletes across different levels.
Talent identification has also been expanded with the introduction of Emerging Khelo India Athletes, Khelo India Utkrishta Vidyalayas, and Khelo India Feeder Schools. The ministry has also proposed greater involvement of private academies in athlete development.
The scheme also includes measures for coach education and support staff development through the National Coach Accreditation Board, along with greater use of sports science in training programmes.
Other components include the expansion of the Fit India initiative, the wider reach of the Sundays on Cycle campaign, and the creation of a National Sports Repository System to support data-driven planning and athlete management.
According to the ministry, the scheme is the first phase of a 10-year strategy aimed at improving India’s Olympic performance, with the target of finishing among the top 10 nations at the 2036 Olympic Games and among the top five by 2047.
