India ended its campaign in the men’s event at the Asian U-19 & U-23 Boxing Championships on a positive note, winning two gold and three silver medals in Jakarta on Thursday. The championships gave several young Indian boxers valuable international experience and highlighted the country’s growing strength in the sport.
In the U-23 category, Indian boxers impressed with two title-winning performances. Vishvanath Suresh won the 50kg gold medal after beating Japan’s Daichi Iwai 3-2 in a closely contested final. Ganga also claimed the 55kg crown, defeating Kazakhstan’s Bexulatn Boranbek by the same margin in another hard-fought final.
Vanshaj came close to winning gold but had to settle for silver in the 65kg category after losing to Uzbekistan’s Ilkhomjon Ergashev in the final.
India also had two contenders in the U-19 men’s finals. Aditya (55kg) and Shubham Rajput (90kg) fought hard but finished with silver medals after losing their respective title bouts to boxers from Uzbekistan.
Overall, India’s men’s team finished the tournament with two gold and three silver medals. Earlier, the women’s contingent secured 17 medals across their respective categories.
