India’s newly appointed T20I captain Shreyas Iyer stressed the importance of adapting to changing conditions after his side’s disappointing 4-0 series defeat against England, following the fifth and final T20I in Southampton on Saturday.

During the post match presentation, captain Shreyas reflected on India’s performance while stressing the need to adapt better to the conditions and also improving their fielding.

“Lot to take out of the series,” he told the host broadcasters. “Conditions, awareness, adaptation. This was the best wicket we played on, the approach was different when we batted. Conditions kept changing from match one. We need to be aware and adapt as professionals. Important to communicate what we could’ve done better. Fielding plays a key role and we need to work on it. Especially overseas, with different dimensions in grounds. We dropped catches which cost us, 220-225 we might’ve chased down but not to be.”

India endured a disappointing outing with both bat and ball as England posted a massive 257/3 in their 20 overs.

In reply, India were restricted to 201/8 despite half-centuries from Ishan Kishan (56) and Tilak Varma (53). Shreyas Iyer (28) and Sanju Samson (27) also contributed, but their efforts were not enough to prevent India from a clean sweep.

Speaking about India’s chase in the fifth T20I and England’s match winning partnership, Shreyas added: “We lost wickets in cluster. We were going after the chase rather than building partnerships. We have to target bowlers, take time. Their execution was spot on. Buttler was sensational, Brook changed the momentum. That partnership steadied the ship.”

India will now shift their attention to the three-match ODI series starting from July 14 in Birmingham.
