Nine Feared Trapped After Pune Building Collapse

Pune, 9th July: Rescue teams are working to establish contact with nine people believed to be trapped under the debris after a three-storey building collapsed in Pune’s Moshi Pradhikaran area on Wednesday afternoon.

Officials said 23 people were inside the building when a massive mound of garbage adjacent to the structure collapsed following heavy rainfall, crashing into the building. Five people managed to escape on their own, while nine others were rescued from the debris and shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

According to officials, employees of a renewable energy company operating a 14-MW power plant in the region were among those trapped, as the building was being used as the company’s administrative office.

A multi-agency rescue operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Army, local police and fire services is underway. Rescue teams are using specialised equipment, including fibre-optic rescue cameras, sound detection devices, earth-moving machinery and medical support units to locate survivors.

Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vijay Suryawanshi and Police Commissioner Vinaykumar Choubey are supervising the rescue operation, while Maharashtra Water Resources and Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan visited the site to review the situation.

Meanwhile, continuous monsoon rains have disrupted normal life across several parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Pune, Nashik and the Konkan region. Heavy rainfall has caused waterlogging, landslides and transport disruptions.

The recently inaugurated ‘missing link’ section of the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, which was temporarily closed after a landslide, has since reopened, though authorities have advised motorists to drive cautiously.
