India wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has become the new world No.1 T20I batter, according to the latest ICC rankings, by replacing his team-mate, opener Abhishek Sharma. Abhishek had held the No.1 position for almost a year before Ishan moved ahead in the latest update released on Wednesday.
Ishan’s success comes after his brilliant performances, especially during the ICC T20 World Cup this year. The left-hander scored 317 runs in the tournament at a strike-rate of 193.29. His consistent performances helped him achieve his career-best rating and take the top spot.
Abhishek is now ranked second with 869 rating points and he is only seven rating points behind Ishan.
The Jharkhand captain has now joined the elite group of Indian batters to reach the top of the ICC T20I rankings. He is the fourth Indian men’s player to become the world’s No.1 T20I batter after Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav.
However, former India captain Suryakumar, Sanju Samson and Hardik Pandya have all slipped in the latest ICC T20I rankings.
In the recently concluded two-match T20I series against Ireland in Belfast, Ishan failed to make an impact with the bat. However, he will aim to bounce back in the five-match T20I series against England which begins on Wednesday at Chester-le-Street.
