For thousands of pre-university students across Bengaluru, this summer marks more than just a break from studies. It is the transition between school and college, bringing excitement, uncertainty and the promise of a new beginning.
After months of intense preparation for board examinations and entrance tests, students are now preparing to step into campuses, meet new people and explore a world beyond school classrooms.
For Ipshita Sengupta, who is set to join Mount Carmel College for a BA in Psychology, the feeling is one of freedom and excitement.
“I was always a rebellious kid, so my school experience wasn’t exactly perfect. Now I’m free. I’m going to college,” she said with a laugh.
Summer unlike any other
Students say this year’s vacation feels different from previous ones because it comes with a sense of finality. Familiar routines, classrooms and teachers are being left behind as they prepare for a new phase of life.
Adithi Vijaya Kumar, who has secured admission to an institute under the Indian Institutes of Management system, described the transition as both exciting and nerve-racking.
“Every other summer, you knew what came next. This time, everything feels different because there is so much uncertainty and change ahead,” she said.
Many students have spent the holiday pursuing interests that had been sidelined during exam preparations. From reading books and learning new skills to joining fitness classes and spending time with family, the break has offered a chance to recharge.
Looking beyond academics
For several students, college represents more than academics. It is an opportunity to participate in cultural activities, clubs, sports and creative pursuits.
Sakshath Sumanth Srikakulam, who will join BMS College of Engineering to study Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, hopes to pursue his passion for music.
A guitarist and aspiring vocalist, he is eager to join a college band and perform on larger stages.
Others are looking forward to sports, competitions and discovering new interests while balancing academics.
A step towards independence
For students moving away from home, the transition also brings a mix of excitement and apprehension.
Many look forward to making new friends, living independently and creating a space of their own. At the same time, leaving behind family and familiar surroundings remains an emotional challenge.
