New Delhi: Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra has joined hands with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to launch a nationwide awareness campaign aimed at educating athletes about the dangers of doping and promoting clean sport across the country.
The initiative was unveiled during the second IOA Athletes Forum, where IOA Chief Executive Officer Raghuram Iyer announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the IOA and the Neeraj Chopra Foundation for the Clean Sports Campaign.
The programme seeks to strengthen anti-doping awareness, reduce violations and encourage athletes to pursue success through discipline, hard work and fair competition.
Chopra urges athletes to avoid shortcuts
New Delhi attendees at the forum were shown a video message from Neeraj Chopra, who is currently in Doha for the Diamond League.
In his message, the two-time Olympic medallist encouraged young athletes to remain patient and resist the temptation to seek shortcuts through performance-enhancing substances.
Chopra reflected on his own sporting journey, emphasising that success at the highest level requires years of dedication and perseverance.
“I have seen how kids want to enhance performance by doping to win big medals. But from my story, I can tell you it took me 10 years to get to the Olympic medal,” he said.
The javelin star, who won gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and silver at the Paris 2024 Olympics, stressed that patience remains one of the most important qualities for aspiring athletes.
Campaign launched amid doping concerns
The campaign comes at a time when India continues to face scrutiny over its anti-doping record.
According to international reports, India has topped the annual list of doping offenders published by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for the past three years.
More recently, the Athletics Integrity Unit classified India as a high-risk country for doping-related violations.
WADA President Witold Banka has also described the issue as a significant concern despite ongoing efforts to improve compliance and awareness.
Officials believe that greater education and athlete engagement are essential to reducing the number of doping cases and strengthening India’s reputation in international sport.
Focus on awareness and education
The Clean Sports Campaign aims to improve understanding of anti-doping regulations among athletes at all levels.
According to IOA officials, the initiative will utilise athlete-led storytelling, digital educational resources, workshops and grassroots outreach programmes to make anti-doping information more accessible.
The campaign is also intended to help athletes avoid inadvertent violations caused by a lack of awareness regarding supplements, medications and prohibited substances.
Chopra said clean sport extends beyond compliance with regulations and involves creating an environment where athletes can seek guidance and clear their doubts without fear.
“Clean sport is not only about rules, it is also about creating a comfortable, safe space for athletes where they can clear their doubts about supplements and performance pressure,” he said.
Sports Ministry considering stronger laws
The campaign coincides with ongoing discussions within the Union Sports Ministry regarding reforms to India’s anti-doping framework.
Officials are reportedly considering legal amendments that would strengthen enforcement mechanisms and potentially criminalise the supply and procurement of banned substances.
The proposed measures are aimed at targeting not only athletes who violate anti-doping regulations but also individuals and networks involved in distributing prohibited performance-enhancing drugs.
Authorities believe stronger legal provisions could serve as a deterrent and complement existing educational efforts.
PT Usha backs initiative
IOA President P. T. Usha said discussions regarding the campaign had been underway for approximately six months and praised Chopra for taking the lead in promoting clean sport.
According to Usha, Chopra’s achievements and credibility make him an ideal ambassador for the initiative.
She said athletes are more likely to trust and learn from someone who has succeeded through dedication and hard work at the highest level.
The IOA chief also reaffirmed the association’s full support for the campaign, describing it as a collaborative effort to safeguard the future of Indian sport.
Foundation aims to support young athletes
Founded in 2023, the Neeraj Chopra Foundation works to improve access to sporting infrastructure and support emerging athletes across India.
The organisation focuses on areas including sports science, nutrition, injury prevention and athlete development.
Sources indicate that Chopra had been exploring the possibility of launching a clean sport initiative for nearly a year due to concerns about the growing number of doping cases and their impact on India’s image in international competition.
The new partnership with the IOA is expected to significantly expand the reach and effectiveness of those efforts.
Conclusion
The launch of the Clean Sports Campaign by Neeraj Chopra and the Indian Olympic Association marks a significant step in India’s efforts to combat doping and promote ethical sporting practices. With athlete education, grassroots outreach and stronger awareness at its core, the initiative aims to foster a culture of integrity and ensure that future sporting success is achieved through talent, hard work and fair play.
