SL vs IND: “Vulnerability against Spinners is Quite Evident” – Maharoof Warns India About Spin Challenge

Former Sri Lankan all-rounder Farveez Maharoof believes India’s struggles against quality spin could be a major challenge in the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka. India will face Sri Lanka in Galle and Colombo, where spin is expected to play an important role given the conditions.

In an exclusive conversation with RevSportz, Maharoof reflected on India’s vulnerability against quality spin. “I think the record speaks for itself,” Maharoof said. “Losing to New Zealand 3-0 was a shocker in my opinion, because before New Zealand went to India, they actually played two Test matches in Galle and Sri Lanka beat them comprehensively. Then the New Zealand side went to India and won 3-0.”

In 2024, India were seen struggling against New Zealand’s spinners, which led to them losing all three Test matches at home. India also lost a two-Test home series against South Africa in 2025.

Maharoof also feels Test cricket can change quickly and said India’s weakness against high-quality spin is clear. “So, cricket is a funny game, you can’t predict,” he said. “But vulnerability against spinners is quite evident in the last couple of series when India lost at home. That high-quality spin, they have not played well.”

The first Test between India and Sri Lanka will begin on August 15 in Galle.
