The Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) interim president Tamim Iqbal is not attending the ICC Board meeting here in Ahmedabad on Sunday, and the BCB would be represented by its chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury.
Asked why is Tamim skipping such an important meeting, with the Bangladesh board in the process of mending its fences with the BCCI, a BCB functionary told RevSportz: “The BCB elections are scheduled on June 7, and he is busy with that. But the process of restoring the relations with the BCCI is very much ongoing.”
The relationship between the BCB and the BCCI had soured badly under the erstwhile Muhammad Yunus’ government in Bangladesh. After the BCCI had directed Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladesh seamer Mustafizur Rahman, the BCB refused to send its national team to India for the T20 World Cup earlier this year. The ICC’s security assessment found “nil to negligible” threat in India. The global body’s Board gave the go-ahead to the original schedule by an overwhelming 14-2 majority. But the BCB, heavily influenced by then Bangladesh government, refused to budge and the ICC eventually had to replace Bangladesh with Scotland for the World Cup.
The BCB, meanwhile, had released an itinerary, mentioning a home white-ball series against India later this year. There’s no confirmation yet from the Indian side on this. Asked if the CEO will have a discussion with the Indian representative at the ICC Board meeting, the BCB functionary said: “It’s not formally on the agenda, but that he would be there, at least an informal conversation is expected.”
Mohsin Naqvi, the Pakistan Cricket Board chair, obviously will not be present in Ahmedabad and will join online.
