2026 Hockey World Cup: India Seal Spot in Second Round with Thrilling Win Over Pakistan

Published:

In what turned out to be a game that had its share of thrills and spills, India once more came out on top against traditional rivals Pakistan, winning 5-3 at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen in the 2026 World Cup. With this victory, India also progressed to the second-round crossover. However, having lost to England in the group phase, they will not carry forward any points into the next round.

Although Pakistan scored three goals, it was India who had the edge for most of the match. India, who began with a 5-2-3 combination, took the lead in the fifth minute of the first quarter, with Harmanpreet Singh converting a penalty corner with a powerful strike. On the back of Abhishek Nain’s ability to control an aerial ball and Mandeep Singh’s timely touch, India made it 2-0. Abhishek was the one who finished the move.

In the 20th minute, when India made it 3-0 through a penalty-corner variation, the result of the match seemed like a foregone conclusion. However, Pakistan came roaring back on the back of goals from Hanann Shahid, who scored two field goals, and Suyfan Khan’s penalty conversion.

Unfortunately for them, India netted a couple more goals to emerge victorious. Arshad Liaquat’s foul on Sukhjeet Singh led to a penalty stroke, with Hardik Singh making no mistake. Meanwhile, Abhishek showcased his trademark dribbling skills to score his second goal of the match.

Even though India came out on top, they would have to tighten up a few areas in terms of their defensive structure. At the fag end of the match, Aditya, the midfielder, was also shown a yellow card for a poor tackle. As a result, India had to play the final stages of the match with only 10 men.

On a side note, there was a decent crowd in attendance to watch the traditional rivals lock horns in a game of hockey.
