The World Cricketers Association (WCA) has questioned the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) decision to revise the format for the 2027 ODI World Cup, warning them that the change could limit meaningful opportunities for the emerging cricket nations.
While the WCA is welcoming the retention of the 14 participating teams, the recent announcement introducing a preliminary qualifying stage within the tournament itself for the three lowest-ranked qualified teams has brought in concerns for the WCA.
Clear Communication & Transparency: They have stated that major structural changes to one of cricket’s biggest events should be accompanied by clear communication, transparent decision-making, and certainty for players and stakeholders who had planned around the previously announced format.
Meaningful Engagement: The association also mentioned that players and their representatives were not meaningfully consulted before the changes were approved. The process of making such significant decisions should involve genuine engagement with the game’s key stakeholders, including the players through their representative bodies.
Reduced Opportunities: The revised structure reduces the opportunity for some qualifying nations to compete against established cricketing powers. They have also warned that this move could limit the sporting, developmental, and commercial benefits that full participation in a World Cup can bring to any emerging cricket nations.
Human Impact: Finally, the WCA has highlighted the human impact of the decision. Noting that behind every structural decision are players, teams, and countries who spend years preparing, investing, and sacrificing in pursuit of a World Cup qualification. Hence, altering the nature of that opportunity midway through the insertion of a qualification cycle carries real professional and personal consequences.
As quoted by the World Cricketers Association website, the WCA CEO Tom Moffat said: “The ICC is entitled to determine the structure of its global events. However, when commitments are made to the game, qualification pathways are established and countries and players invest years pursuing those opportunities, significant changes deserve genuine consultation, transparency and a clear explanation.”
He added: “This isn’t simply about the format of one tournament. It’s about ensuring game-wide confidence in how the game makes major strategic decisions.”
Scott Edwards, the Netherlands captain, said: “The ICC talks a lot about growing the game globally but decisions like this make it harder for associate nations to play against the best teams in the world. Those opportunities are what helps countries improve and inspires the next generation of players. If we’re serious about making cricket a global sport, we should be creating more opportunities on the global stage, not less.”
Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus said: “We all accept that you have to earn the right to be there, but we also want qualification to provide a real opportunity to compete on the biggest stage.”
New Zealand batsman Daryl Mitchell said: “We are fully supportive of players and countries around the world being provided with consistent and fair opportunities to reach and compete on the game’s biggest platforms.”
