Four wins in a row for Trent Rockets in the ongoing Women’s Hundred with star opener Sophia Dunkley continuing her sensational form by claiming her third consecutive Player of the Match award. Dunkley smashed 65 off 37 balls – her third successive half-century – as Trent Rockets chased down 123 against Birmingham Phoenix with six wickets and 16 balls to spare in Nottingham on August 5.
Earlier, Kim Garth’s four-wicket haul helped Rockets restrict Phoenix to 122/7 before Dunkley once again ensured the Rockets maintained their winning momentum.
Heading into the tournament, Dunkley had featured in only three matches at the Women’s T20 World Cup for England. However, she made the most of her opportunities, scoring 120 runs at an average of 60 and a strike rate of 139.53, including a half-century.
She carried that confidence into the Hundred, beginning the campaign with an unbeaten 43 against Birmingham Phoenix only. Although she managed only two low scores in the following matches, Dunkley has since rediscovered her best, producing three consecutive match-winning fifties.
Speaking after the match, Dunkley said: “I don’t really know to be honest, but I’m just trying to go out there, play with freedom, and enjoy myself. We’ve got such a good batting lineup, which gives us that freedom at the top of the order. So yeah, it’s given us a lot of belief, and it’s just nice to play.”
The knock also took Dunkley to the top of the run-scoring charts this season. She now has 259 runs in six innings at an average of 51.80 and a strike rate of 170.39, with three half-centuries.
In addition, she has now become the leading run-scorer in Women’s Hundred history, overtaking her Trent Rockets and England teammate Nat Sciver-Brunt. Dunkley now has 1,324 runs in 45 innings while Sciver-Brunt has 1,317 runs in 39 innings.
On surpassing her teammate, Dunkley joked: “No, I haven’t mentioned it to her! I think we’ve just been great with the bat overall.”
The victory lifted Trent Rockets to the top of the points table with 20 points from six matches, edging Southern Brave on net run rate (+1.605 to +0.399).
