Back-to-back must-win games, back-to-back match-winning performances from Phoebe Litchfield and Deepti Sharma as Sunrisers Leeds knocked Welsh Fire out of the ongoing Women’s Hundred.
In a crucial clash in Leeds on Sunday, Sunrisers registered a comfortable six-wicket win to keep their own playoff hopes alive.
First, it was Deepti who starred with the ball, returning figures of 3/13 to help the hosts restrict Welsh Fire to 121/8. Then, in the chase, Litchfield continued her excellent run of form at the top of the order, smashing another quickfire half-century.
The Australian opener reached her fifty in just 22 balls and eventually finished with 55 off 25 deliveries at a strike-rate of 220. Her explosive knock set the tone as Sunrisers chased down 122 with 26 balls to spare.
It was the second consecutive must-win game in which both Litchfield and Deepti stepped up when their team needed them most.
In the previous clash against Birmingham Phoenix, Litchfield smashed an unbeaten 71 off 33 balls at a strike-rate of 215.15, including a record-breaking 20-ball fifty, the fastest in Women’s Hundred history. Deepti also produced another excellent spell, taking 3/11.
Litchfield has now won the Player of the Match award in consecutive games and moved to the top of the run-scoring charts this season with 262 runs in seven innings.
Deepti, meanwhile, has turned her campaign around dramatically. After struggling during the middle phase of the tournament, she has taken eight wickets in her last three matches. With 10 wickets overall, she is now the joint-second-highest wicket-taker this season.
Sunrisers Leeds will play their final group-stage game against Manchester Super Giants in Manchester on August 11. As things stand, the winner of that clash will secure a place in the playoffs.
