‘We Were Exceptionally Rusty’: Pybus Admits DRS Errors Cost Afghanistan Dear

Afghanistan’s struggle with the Decision Review System (DRS) proved highly expensive during the one-off Test against India at Mullanpur. Three settled batters — K L Rahul, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill — could have been easily dismissed if the right call was taken at the right time. However, the Afghanistan captain declined a review on all three occasions, highlighting their lack of experience in the longest format of the game.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Afghanistan head coach, Richard Pybus admitted that they have some work to do on their review process.  “I think the captain is absolutely reliant on the couple of guys that he is speaking to for the decision-making process. He has got the wicketkeeper who has to give him his alignment, and he is reliant on the bowler as well in terms of what he is seeing in front of him. We were exceptionally rusty. It was not clear. I think there was a lack of conviction and decision-making. We chatted about it afterwards because we were way off the pace with that and it did cost us.”

When asked about the umpiring and if the constant not out decisions were disappointing, he mentioned: “I know from my experience of being a director of cricket how rigorous the review of the umpiring is and how the decision-making process is reviewed by the ICC. When umpires make a mistake, every single decision is reviewed and the umpire will get feedback on that. I have absolutely no doubt that the umpire is doing the best that he can. He will get feedback and he will be aware of that more than anybody else honestly.”
