Ryan ten Doeschate is reportedly exploring a return to his former stomping grounds at the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The move, however, hinges on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) greenlighting his departure from his current post as the assistant coach of the Indian team.
Handpicked by head coach Gautam Gambhir to join the national team’s backroom staff, the Dutch international has already initiated personal talks with his mentor about stepping down. Gambhir, who views ten Doeschate as a highly trusted lieutenant, has yet to approve of the departure and remains keen on convincing him to stay in the Indian dressing room.
For ten Doeschate, the primary catalyst for the requested exit is the gruelling, year-round travel schedule inherent to international cricket. Seeking a coaching role that demands less time on the road, the condensed two-month window of the IPL presents a much more sustainable alternative.
A move back to KKR would represent a natural homecoming. Ten Doeschate enjoys a storied, deeply rooted history with the franchise, having spent several successful years there as a player before transitioning into a coaching role that was instrumental in securing their IPL 2024 championship.
The situation is expected to reach a definitive resolution soon, as ten Doeschate’s current contract with the BCCI officially concludes following the ongoing white-ball tour of England. With KKR reportedly contemplating a broader shake-up of their coaching staff ahead of the new season, a reunion in purple and gold seems highly plausible.
