Kolkata, 4th June: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Krishna Chakraborty on Thursday resigned as the Mayor of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, bringing to an end her 16-year tenure as the head of the civic body.
A close associate of TMC supremo and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Chakraborty submitted her resignation to the Municipal Commissioner earlier in the day.
Speaking to reporters, Chakraborty said the decision was entirely personal and not driven by any political or administrative differences.
“This is entirely my personal decision. I have been in this chair for 16 years. I have no grudge against anyone. I have followed the rules to resign,” she said.
The veteran TMC leader added that she now wishes to devote more time to herself while continuing her public service as a councillor.
“I want to give some time to myself. I want to work as a councillor,” Chakraborty said.
Officials of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation confirmed receiving her resignation letter.
According to civic officials, copies of the resignation have also been forwarded to the State Municipal Affairs Minister and the Additional Chief Secretary of the Municipal Affairs Department.
“We have received her letter expressing her desire to step down. She has also marked copies of her resignation to the Municipal Affairs Minister and the Additional Chief Secretary of the department,” an official said.
Chakraborty has been one of the longest-serving mayors in the Kolkata metropolitan region and has overseen key civic and infrastructure developments in Bidhannagar during her tenure.
The Trinamool Congress has not yet announced who will succeed her as mayor. Further action regarding the appointment of a new civic chief is expected to follow as per municipal regulations.
Her resignation comes amid heightened political developments in West Bengal, though Chakraborty maintained that her decision was solely based on personal considerations.
